Project Inspiration: Lula

Posted on

Every day we get non-knitters walking into the shop asking if we sell our shop samples. After we break the "sorry, no" news, we encourage them to sign up for our beginning knitting class. I've noticed that over these past two weeks- there is one sample in particular that is getting a whole lot of attention.

Lula is an oversized cowl that is available to download for $6. It calls for 5 skeins of Arietta, which is an incredibly soft merino & yak blend for $13 per skein.

Arietta really is the perfect choice for this cozy accessory. It's such a plump and squishy yarn, it's ideal for cozy layer-able accessories such as Lula. In addition to being so soft and touchable, the merino & yak is a very warm blend, but since Lula is so loose fitting and flowy- it isn't suffocatingly hot.

Fringe always get a mixed reaction- some love em, some hate em- but I think that they are a gorgeous detail on Lula! It's a funky, playful, bohemian style that's really popular in our area. To be honest, I think it's the tassels that draw those non-knitter folks into the shop. They're hypnotizing!

Lula is knit in the round, and you simply alternate two different stitch patterns- an easy rib and an openwork lace design. Once the main part of cowl is finished, you cut and add the fringe to one side. Since the fringe is the final step- you can easily omit it from your version if you prefer.

The Lula in the images was knit up with the Arietta colorway Antique Teal. They are all beautiful lightly-tinted and sophisticated colors, but my two favorites have to be Gold and Pink Champagne. What do you think?

Karne, Arietta is a bit more of a worsted weight than DK. 5 – 5.5 stitches per inch on US size 5 – 6 needles.

    Hi there
I would like to know the yarn weight used for the Lula cowl. It looks DK, can you confirm?
    Thank you
