12 Knits to Gift: The Dutch Cowl
For the Mom who is impossible to shop for
Recognize this sumptuous treat? Back in July many of us treated ourselves to this luxurious cashmere project. I mean, why not? It's a gorgeous high quality yarn that feels divine, and the pattern is beautiful and easy to wear. Plus, it's an easy-to-knit design. It's a win-win-win-win.
Since so many people have fallen in love with this cowl, including ourselves, we wanted to include it as our #2 idea in our 12 Knits to Gift series. You absolutely still have time to get this cowl finished before Christmas, however you'll want to get started on this one soon. While it's an easy knit, time is ticking and this will definitely take longer than a hat or fingerless mitts.
The Dutch Cowl pattern is a free pattern that will arrive along with your yarn shipment. The cowl needs two skeins (one skein of each color) of the 2-Ply Mongolian Cashmere, which is indeed, 100% Mongolian Cashmere. Many consider to this be the world's finest type of cashmere. Since cashmere yarn is actually made from the fine hairs from the goat's undercoat, the fiber is very lightweight, very insulating, and much softer than wool. Not only does this fiber feel great, but obviously it also takes dye beautifully. Each skein of this yarn was hand dyed by the artists of Jade Sapphire, and each colorway is incredibly vibrant and rich. Since the yarn is $47 a skein, this project isn't a gift for just anyone. This cowl is a treat that should be draped on the shoulders of someone on your list who deserves to be spoiled. Someone who appreciates all that you do. Sound like anyone you know?
The Dutch Cowl's slip stitch pattern basically blends the two colors together, which is a lovely effect. This blending works best when the colors you choose are more similar to each other than colors that have a high level of contrast. Picking contrasting colors would still result in a beautiful cowl, however, if you want the subtlety of the cowl we made- select shades that are closer together. Our Dutch Cowl was knit up using the colorways Bougainvillea and Cousin Coral. You only need 1 skein of each color to complete this cozy cashmere dream! Here are a few other color combinations that would also work well:
One more thing I want to mention... If you finish this or any other #northcoastknittery project before December 1st- take a photo and share it with us on Pinterest or Instagram! Include the #northcoastknittery hashtag in a description, and you'll automatically be entered to win a $50 gift certificate which you can use either in the shop or online.
Stay tuned for projects #3-12 in our 12 Knits to Gift Series!
